PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The renovation of the Bastille, the only point of contact between the city and the mountains, is an essential component of the urban project. It must promote social equity by developing activities that are interesting to all populations of the metropolitan area and provide accessibility to the area for all visitors. In addition to having environmental sustainability, the site must also combine economic performance with a realistic development of the area where future operations won’t depend on public subsidies.

OUR APPROACH

A concerted approach enabled us to define five essential needs for the site: safety, accessibility, general maintenance, updating existing networks (water, electrical, sewage), as well as environment and heritage preservation. Impact on the environment and regulations were also studied and summarized. We proposed an approach combined by theme and by zone which included: modifications of the walkways, usage of scenic stops (areas to stop and enjoy the view, picnic areas, sports and recreational areas), an update to fitness stations, and spotlight the caves. The creation of a welcoming area to organize the visitors’ stay, as well as themed paths, an “accrobastille”, an aerial adventure course that zigzags between the trees and fort, and an extension of the via ferrata were also proposed. Highlighting the two main purposes of the site (functioning as a scenic look-out and an area with various mountain activities) allowed the community to choose a development scenario to phase in the investments.
