PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Due to issues such as lack of space for a segregated public transport lane, high population density, chaotic planning and non-existent traffic regulations in Kathmandu, the Nepalese Government is interested in installing a cable transport system as a means to solve its transportation problems. Kathmandu has a population of more than 2.5 million in the metropolis. It faces the challenges of large developing cities: high population growth caused by rural exodus, an exploding demand for means of transport, and congestion and gridlock that generate pollution levels well beyond the critical threshold. Organizing a cable transport network may be a structured response to these transport issues. A study carried out in 2012 advocated the implementation of a metro, but the Nepalese Government and the Asian Development Bank thought it to be too expensive and too long to build with regard to the primary needs of the capital.

OUR APPROACH

  • Define the scope of the study based on the plans of the Asian Development Bank (ADB)
  • Model the anticipated traffic (a shrewd estimate of the potential usage)
  •  Select the pilot cable transport line to be studied more closely (multi-criteria analysis)
  • Study the feasibility of the line from architectural, environmental, urban, technical, technological and operational points of view
  • Identify the impact on existing public and private transportation networks as well as the impact on the stakeholders
  • Assess the CAPEX/ OPEX costs and completion schedule (phasing)
  • Perform the equivalent of a Cost & Benefit Analysis in order to provide the estimated RRI (rate of Return On Investment) to the ADB.
